Surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures increased by a whopping 20 percent.
The number of surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures in the United States increased by a whopping 20 percent in 2003 to a total of nearly 8.3 million! According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the number of surgical procedures increased 12 percent, while the number of nonsurgical procedures increased 22 percent from 2002.
TOP SURGICAL PROCEDURES
- Liposuction
- Breast Augmentation
- Eyelid Surgery
- Rhinoplasty
- Female Breast Reduction
The big winner? Liposuction, with over 380,000 procedures competed in 2003.
Other surgical procedures enjoying big surges in popularity are body contouring procedures often used to treat patients with major weight loss.
- Lower Body Lifts up 127 percent
- Thigh Lifts increased by 109 percent
- Upper Arm Lifts increased by 68 percent
Abdominoplasty increased by 42 percent
Buttock procedures also received a lift in popularity:
- Buttock Lift increased by 70 percent
- Buttock Augmentation increased by 533 percent.
TOP NONSURGICAL PROCEDURES
The top five nonsurgical procedures performed in 2003 were:
- Botox Injection
- Laser Hair Removal
- Microdermabrasion
- Chemical Peel
- Collagen Injection
Botox Injection tops this list with 2.2 million procedures completed in 2003.
GENDER DISTRIBUTION
Women had 87 percent of the cosmetic procedures performed in 2003 – that’s nearly 7.2 million procedures, up 16 percent from 2002, while surgical procedures among men increased by 22 percent. Nonsurgical procedures expanded by a staggering 34 percent. Liposuction is the most popular surgical procedure for both sexes, and Botox injection the most popular nonsurgical procedure.
